Hey guys, sorry I haven't been keeping up on my posting. Life kinda caught up to me. I'm going to try to be a little more serious with this. I am going to post minimum once a week and will do my best to turn out high quality reviews! Thank you for reading :)
Deep Blue is a mermaid story. It begins and centers around the viewpoint of a merprincess who is the heart of a prophecy to slay an ancient evil. The story begins with her preparing for a ceremony that will validate her as the next ruler of the merkindgom. It is a matriarch led society, with the husbands being royal consorts. The kingdom is attacked and Princess Serafina has to flee. Along the way she discovers more about the prophecy and begins to try to figure out how to fill it. She meets comrades that are to help her fulfill the prophecy and she also meets with many dangers. Some who would seem to be friend are foe, and vice versa. In the end she narrowly escapes the fiend who is behind all the tragedy.
This story is a fun read. The descriptions of the elaborate outfits and the different kinds of food were well done and provided enough details to give a picture of what they might be. The relationships were well developed and the characters were interesting. Serafina is a great character with lot of determination and she is a natural born leader. She definitely is the moving force behind the prophecy and is the strongest supporter of the group. Not all the characters are perfect, which is always refreshing because it makes them easier to relate to and more fascinating to read about. I also appreciated the way Donnelly integrated mermaid sayings into the book without making it painfully obvious; they were very natural.
The story, while interesting, was predictable. There are stereotypical characters and the plot line moves on with expected twists. There is one romantic twist that reminds me of the Scarlet Pimpernel. I literally read one part and immediately thought of that movie. If you don't know what I'm referring to, then read this book and watch the Scarlet Pimpernel with Anthony Andrews and Ian McKellan :)
I also thought the story dragged out quite a bit. I was surprised at how long it took me to get where I was in the story. I thought I would be farther along in the story when I reached the end of the book. I understand this is a trilogy, but it was a bit of a long read.
All in all this book is very enjoyable. While it is a bit predictable it is a very fun read when you need some fantasy. You should go check it out! The second book is already out; as a matter of fact, I have it on hold and will hopefully be able to get it in a couple of weeks. Thank you very much for reading and PLEASE give me feedback :) You can message me privately or write a comment on the blog, but I would really appreciate some honest feedback on how my blog can improve. Thank you again for reading.
I give this book a 7 out of 10 and recommend it to YA readers.
